GAME ONE
Overview:
Cliff Lunceford recorded a clutch two-run single in the eighth inning to help Howard Payne University to a 5-3 come-from-behind win in game one Friday. The Eagles opened the game with a run in the first frame on Chance Edwards' RBI single. The gritty Yellow Jackets later followed with a pair of runs in the next inning to hold a 2-1 advantage. The Eagles countered with two runs in the third on Breyden Varner's two-run homer. Howard Payne wouldn't go away and evened the score 3-3 in the sixth. Eventually, the Yellow Jackets were in position to plate the runs needed and delivered in the top of the eighth. From there, the Eagles flew out, grounded out, walked and flew out in the bottom of the eighth. Starting pitcher Dalton Spurgeon induced a double play in the third and relief pitcher Tyler Vernon did the same in the seventh to stop any scoring threats. The Eagles' offense produced eight hits, with Varner and Edwards tallying two hits apiece.
