Concordia Baseball Team Takes Two ASC Wins

Clarksville, Ark.-Concordia University Texas used a pair of grand slams to break open close games and hand the Eagles two American Southwest Conference losses Sunday.

Ozarks dropped game one 7-3 and then lost game two 7-1. Tomorrow's game three has been cancelled and will not be made up due to anticipated wintry weather conditions and current field conditions.

In game one Sunday, Ozarks (2-6, 0-2 ASC) jumped on starting pitcher Cameron Cox early to score three runs in the first inning. The Eagles had just one hit, but were also able to draw two walks. With the bases loaded, Andres Acosta recorded an infield single to score two runs. Jacob Smith later had an RBI groundout to put Ozarks in front 3-1. However, Cox was able to settle in and surrender just four more hits the rest of the game. Concordia generated a run in the third and fifth to even the score 3-3. The game-changer came in the sixth inning though as Caleb Maddox hit a two-out grand slam on a 3-2 count to give Concordia a 7-3 advantage. Ozarks finished with five hits in the contest.

Alex Rodriguez (1-1) took the loss in relief.

In game two, things got interesting in the fifth inning when snow began to fall. At that point, the game was scoreless. However, Concordia again had the game-changing hit when Adam Ortega hit a two-out grand slam in the sixth to push the Tornados in front 5-0. Ozarks did score once in the bottom of the sixth when Caleb Hemphill crossed the plate on a passed ball.

Andrew Beck paced Ozarks at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance. Hemphill and John Singler each had doubles. Oscar Dominguez (0-1) took the loss as the starter.

Ozarks is scheduled to play Hendrix College February 24 in Clarksville.
