Softball Team Opens With Tough Losses

Lyon College (4-2) took game one 8-3 and won the nightcap 5-2.

In game one, Ozarks (0-2) let a 3-1 lead slip away in the bottom of the sixth when Lyon College scored seven runs on six hits. Ozarks got on the board when Kelsey Mefford blasted a two-run homer in the second to go up 2-1. Ozarks held the lead for the next three innings and added a run in the top of the sixth on Morgan Goates' RBI single. But Lyon College's bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning and scored seven to take a 8-3 advantage. 

Goates and Emily Burns each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Stephany Henson (0-1) suffered the loss. She went six innings.

In game two, Ozarks trailed 2-0 after three, but tied the non-conference contest in the top of the fourth when Kelsey Stephens ripped a two-run double to right field for a pair of runs. But the tie didn't last long. Lyon College again produced at the plate as three runs were scored on four hits in the bottom of the fourth to secure the win. Ozarks did have its chances later the game, but couldn't cash in. In the fifth, Nicole Ashley had a double and Sarah Otteman followed with a single. Emily Burns then recorded a single to center field to load the bases. But Lyon forced a fly out and a strikeout to end the rally. Ozarks put a runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to push across a run.

Nicole Ashley paced Ozarks with a 3-for-3 performance at the plate.

Kelsey Mefford (0-1) took the loss after tossing five innings and striking out four.

Ozarks will play in the University of Dallas Spring Kickoff February 27 in Irving, Texas. Ozarks will face Cornell College in game one and then take on University of Dallas in game two.
