Seventeen different organizations received support through local campus fundraising efforts held from Jan. 23-Feb. 5. Included were the Boys and Girls Club of Longview; Boys and Girls Club of Marshall; Children's Miracle Network; Good Samaritan Ministries; JDFR (Improving Lives, Curing Type 1 Diabetes); Kerrville YMCA; Marshall Boys & Girls Club; PATH (People Attempting To Help); Richardson YMCA; St. Frances Cabrini Cancer Center in Alexandria; Special Olympics Alpine; Special Olympics Arkansas; Special Olympics Texas; and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
In the six years of the conference-wide community service campaign, over $50,000 has been raised to benefit 57 different charitable organizations in ASC campus communities. In each of the past two years, the combined conference SAAC groups have topped the $10,000 mark.
"Coin by coin, the spirited and enthusiastic fundraising campaigns created by our SAAC groups reflect the campus, conference and Division III commitment to community involvement," ASC Commissioner Amy Carlton said.
The two-week SAAC event is also designed as a challenge among the ASC member campuses and is scheduled during the turn of the conference division basketball schedule.
Schreiner University, located in Kerrville, Texas, was the top-collecting ASC institution for the second straight year, raising $2,365.87. Schreiner student-athletes helped raise funds for the Kerrville YMCA. Funds collected at Schreiner will help provide children the opportunity to be involved in team sport programs at the YMCA. In two years, the Schreiner SAAC has donated $5,170.87.
"It's been the engagement of the community that has made this a success," said Schreiner SAAC President Tom Pappas, a senior soccer and cross country student-athlete. "It's been great to involve those that will benefit from the campaign. We've gotten a lot of support. There is a sense of pride in it."
Schreiner collected the bulk of its funds at Edington Gym on Feb. 2 and 4 as its basketball teams took on McMurry University and Hardin-Simmons University, respectively, in conference action. A check presentation to the YMCA will be made during the organization's end-of-the-year banquet later this spring.
"Fitness in general and the experience of team sports is so vital," Pappas said. "The YMCA gave many of us student-athletes at Schreiner the opportunity to be where we are at today. That is why it is so special to give back."
In addition to Pappas, Schreiner's SAAC officers consist of vice president Roni Kloss, secretary Jamie Burns, treasurer Trevor Brown and advisor Drew Miller.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor came in second place as it raised a personal-record $1,807.23 for JDFR, an organization that helps the fight against juvenile diabetes. UMHB also posted the highest donation increase in the conference from 2011, improving by nearly $1,500. The UMHB SAAC officers consist of president Sara Hayward, vice president Jenna Womack, secretary Miranda Shorter and advisor Effel Harper.
The Texas Lutheran University SAAC finished in third place by raising $1,072.52 and donating for the second straight time to Susan G. Komen for the Cure in honor of Kathy Starch, the wife of team doctor David Starch, who has battled cancer. TLU has donated nearly $3,500.00 to Susan G. Komen over the last two years. Texas Lutheran's SAAC officers consist of president Kyle McNally, vice president Sara Usry and advisor Tiffany Davis.
Claiming victories in SAAC head-to-head competitions against their basketball travel partners were: Schreiner, Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry, East Texas Baptist University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, Sul Ross State University and the University of Texas at Dallas.
Along with Mary Hardin-Baylor, posting its highest "Make a Change in 14 Days" total in the six-year history of the campaign was Texas-Dallas ($805.30 split between Special Olympics Texas and Richardson YMCA), LeTourneau ($745.77 for Boys and Girls Club of Longview) and East Texas Baptist ($287.19 for Boys and Girls Club of American).
