Softball Team Enjoys Connection At Special Olympics Event

The event, known as the Unified Softball Tournament, is held annually in Clarksville and has become something that Ozarks regularly participates in. The Lady Eagles have been approached about participating in the event every year since first getting involved back in 2008.

"It just makes sense that we help with it," said Ozarks Head Coach Laurie Adkins. "It's a great opportunity for our girls, and they really enjoy doing it."

The participation of the Lady Eagles has made a lasting impact on both Ozarks' softball program and the lives of the Special Olympians. While the Olympians get a chance to steal bases on the field, they also steal the hearts of the players that volunteer to work with them.

"The ones who had done it before, they look forward to it every year," said Adkins. "The ones who hadn't done it before didn't realize what it entailed, but they were excited just to be able to help out. "

Adkins and her players are looking forward to continuing to make their participation in the event an annual occurrence.

"As long as they have the tournament and want our help, we will be there."

The Special Olympians will return to campus during the Unified Basketball Tournament which will be held at Ozarks in March.
