Sul Ross State Softball Team Earns Saturday Sweep

Clarksville, Ark.-Sul Ross State University edged the Lady Eagles 3-2 in game one and then had a big sixth inning to earn a 11-7 game two victory to complete a Saturday American Southwest Conference softball sweep.

In game one, Ozarks (1-13, 0-11 ASC) rallied to put two runners in scoring position with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Sul Ross State (2-12, 2-9 ASC) pitcher Keri McShan was able to force a fly out to end the game. Trailing 3-1, Kayla Gray started the seventh-inning rally with a double to leftfield. With one out, Krysten Shavers ripped a single to centerfield to advance Gray to third. Arel Ferguson then received an RBI on a fielder's choice, but Shavers was out on the play for the second out. From there, the Lady Eagles couldn't push any more runs across the plate.

Sul Ross held a 2-1 lead after three complete innings and then added a decisive run in the fourth. Ozarks out hit Sul Ross 8-6, and the Lady Lobos were able to overcome four errors.

Kristen Millwood paced Ozarks at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance. Molly Bowman went 2-for-3 with a triple. Haley McKee (1-5) received the loss and tossed all seven innings.

In game two, Sul Ross scored first with three runs in the first. Ozarks answered with a run in the bottom half of the frame on a Michelle Edmiston RBI. Sul Ross responded with two runs in the second, but Ozarks again came back with its own offensive attack. With two outs, Bowman tripled and Millwood, Gray and Edmiston followed with back-to-back-to-back hits and RBI to pull Ozarks within 5-4. However, the Lady Lobos moved ahead 11-4 in the top of the sixth. The Lady Eagles did score three times in the bottom half of the inning behind two hits, but that would be all Ozarks could generate.

Gray finished 3-for-4 and Bowman, Millwood and Edmiston each had two hits. Tabitha McClane (0-4) took the loss.

Ozarks will finish its series against Sul Ross State Sunday at 11:00 am.
