Lady Eagles Split Softball Double-Header Against LeTourneau

Lady Eagles Split Softball Double-Header Against LeTourneau

Clarksville, Ark.-The Lady Eagles split their double-header Tuesday against American Southwest Conference opponent LeTourneau University in unseasonably cold weather.

Ozarks (2-3, 2-3 ASC) plated five runs in the second inning to gain a 5-1 victory in game one, but LeTourneau (8-3, 3-2 ASC) got a pair of spectacular defensive plays in the nightcap to earn a 8-1 win.

In game one, the Lady Eagles' offense generated three hits and then took advantage of two LeTourneau errors to post five runs. With runners on second and third, Laken Gray ripped a single up the middle to start the offensive outburst. Hailie Tolich crossed the plate on a fielder's choice, and Beth Massey drove in another run with a single through the left side of the infield. Massey and Madison Cluck later scored on a throwing error to cap Ozarks' five-run frame. LeTourneau did score a run in the top of the fifth, but that would be all it would generated against starting pitcher Hailie Gilbert. The freshman posted a scoreless fifth and sixth inning to pick up her second win of the season. Gilbert retired the side in the first and second inning before LeTourneau would record its first hit in the third inning. Gilbert threw a seven-hit complete game to improve her record to 2-1.

Tolich finished 3-for-3 to pace Ozarks at the plate. Ryan Gibson went 2-for-2.

In game two, Ozarks had its chances to rally from a deficit, but LeTourneau made a pair of timely defensive plays to change the course of the game. LeTourneau led 2-0 after three, but Ozarks put two runners in scoring position with only one out in the bottom of the fourth. Erika Henderson slashed what appeared to be an easy double to right centerfield before LeTourneau's rightfielder made a spectacular diving catch to keep the Lady Eagles from scoring. Still trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Brooke Hoffsommer led off the inning with a sharp single to centerfield. Kayla Gray then reached base on an error. Hoffsommer and Gray advanced a base on a fielder's choice. With one out, Kaley Coppock hit a high fly ball that again appeared to be headed for an open space in shallow right field before LeTourneau's second baseman made an over-the-shoulder catch to double up Gray and end the threat.

Ozarks was limited to two hits in game two. Hannah Oler (0-1) took the loss as the starter.

Ozarks will finish its series against LeTourneau tomorrow in a single-game starting at 11:00 a.m.
