Shavers Powers Ozarks Past Sul Ross State

Clarksville, Ark.-Krysten Shavers homered twice, including a clutch solo shot in the sixth inning in game one, to help Ozarks take a double-header sweep against American Southwest Conference opponent Sul Ross State University Friday afternoon.

Fueled by Shavers' game-winning homer, Ozarks (4-4, 4-4 ASC) took game one 2-1 and then got four RBI from the junior from Waco, Texas, to earn a 11-3 win in game two.

In game one, Sul Ross (2-7, 2-7 ASC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth, but Ozarks responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning to even the contest 1-1. The score came when Kayla Gray drove in Haleigh Moore on a single to centerfield. Prior to the fifth inning, Ozarks' starter Abby Mork allowed just one hit. Mork wouldn't allow another hit in the game as she quickly worked through the sixth frame facing three batters. Following Shavers' clutch solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, Mork forced a fly out, a ground out and then struck out Zeriah Leyva in the seventh to end the game. Mork improves to 3-2 overall.

In game two, Sul Ross State again jumped out on top, this time with a 2-0 lead in the third. But Ozarks' bats were too much for the Lobos in the bottom half of the frame, recording six hits and scoring seven runs. Hannah Oler doubled in a pair of runs, and then Shavers later followed with a two-run homer. Moore and Hailey Ostrander each had RBI as Ozarks led 7-2 at the end of the third. Sul Ross got one run back in the fourth, but Ozarks answered with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Shavers produced both runs in the fifth with a double and Kayla Gray cranked out a two-run homer in the sixth to end the contest.

Shavers finished 3-for-4 with 4 RBI. Brooke Hoffsommer went 3-for-3, and Gray and Oler posted two RBI. Oler (1-2) also received the win.

Ozarks will finish its series against Sul Ross State tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
