Softball Team Splits Double-Header with Hardin-Simmons

Big 7th Inning propels Eagles to 10-8 win in Game 2

Abilene, Texas-Tied 7-7 in the start of the final inning, the Eagles added three big insurance runs to put the Cowgirls away and gain a 10-8 win in game two in Friday's double-header.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Beth Massey ripped a clutch RBI single into left field, scoring two runs. Shortly after, Emily Miller's RBI groundout to short allowed Brook Hoffsommer to cross the plate and put the tenth run on the board for Ozarks (5-6, 5-6 ASC). The Cowgirls (7-8, 3-8 ASC) almost rallied in the bottom of the inning, but pitcher Abby Mork limited the Cowgirls to one run, holding on to a 10-8 victory.

Hannah Oler was the starting pitcher in game two for the Eagles, and pulled out a narrow victory over the Cowgirls who had been slugging all afternoon. Krysten Shavers and Laken Gray powered the Eagles in an offensive slugfest. Shavers was 3-for-4 against the Cowgirls, with a walk, two singles and a double. Gray's two RBI's gave the Eagles the scoring edge they needed over the hard-hitting Cowgirls.

And the Cowgirls rallied early, putting up four runs in the second inning on an RBI double and a two-run homerun. Hailey Ostrander answered for the Eagles first, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Hoffsommer in the third, to cut the Cowgirl lead to three runs. With Shavers and Miller on base for the Eagles in the fourth, Laken Gray kicked the Eagles comeback into gear with an RBI double to left center. Emily Miller, Kayla Gray and Laken Gray would all cross the plate for Ozarks, and tie the game at 4-4. Ozarks would add two more in the top of the fifth inning, on a walk and an HSU throwing error, to make the score 6-4. But the Cowgirls answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring three with another two-run homerun and an RBI double, to take a 7-6 lead over the embattled Eagles.

Massey would get things started off in the sixth for Ozarks, reaching base on a single into right field. Following a single by Shavers and a walk to Miller, Laken Gray pounded out her second RBI of the afternoon, tying it up 7-7, before Ozarks sealed the deal in the final inning.

The Eagles, however, suffered a 9-1 loss to HSU in the opening game of the series. The Cowgirls did the bulk of the damage in the fourth inning, scoring six runs on back-to-back RBI doubles and an RBI single, as pitcher Mork was unable to contain the Cowgirl offense. Ozarks was able to answer with one run, coming when Kayla Gray scored on a sacrifice fly from Haleigh Moore in the top of the sixth.
