No. 6 East Texas Baptist Escapes With 3-2 Win

Clarksville, Ark.-The No. 6-ranked East Texas Baptist University Tigers softball team escaped with a 3-2 game two win to earn a Friday afternoon sweep against the Eagles in American Southwest Conference play.

East Texas Baptist (23-6, 15-5 ASC) led the entire game, but had to hold off the rallying Eagles (6-21, 4-19 ASC) in the bottom of the seventh in game two. The Eagles had things clicking in game two with pitcher Katie Ventress holding the Tigers' offense in check and getting a number of important defensive plays. The Tigers recorded a sacrifice fly in the first inning to take a 1-0 advantage. Ventress allowed only two hits through five innings. The Tigers had a two-run sixth inning, but not before catcher Laken Gray made a perfect throw to catch Lindsey Vasquez stealing. Prior to that Ventress got help from shortstop Hailey Ostander, who made back-to-back running catches in foul territory in the second inning. With East Texas Baptist leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles put pressure on starting pitcher Jordan Anderson. Ventress singled and then Hannah Oler laced a double to right centerfield to score pinch runner Haley Hardy. Still down 3-1, Sydney Key reached second base on an error by the centerfielder, allowing Oler to cross the plate. But with two outs and the tying run in scoring position, Anderson was able to record the final out on a strike out.

Ventress (2-7) took the loss. She allowed only four hits in the game.

In game one, the Tigers used a four-run first inning to post a 7-0 shutout. The Eagles were limited to a pair of hits in the contest. Oler (3-11) took the loss as the starter.

The Eagles will finish the series against ETBU tomorrow at noon.
