Muniz, Sharpe Highlight Win Over Arkansas Baptist

Corey Muniz placed 2nd at the Oklahoma City University Open Sunday in the 125-pound class.

Little Rock, Ark.-The Eagles wrestling team posted a 48-12 win over Arkansas Baptist Thursday night in Little Rock.

Corey Muniz (133) and Evan Sharpe (285) were two of the standouts Thursday night. Muniz had a pin early in second period, while Sharpe's pin came in the third period.

Overall, assistant coach Jason Schweer was pleased with the team's effort.

"I certainly want to credit Arkansas Baptist and Coach Roosevelt's guys", he said. "They came to battle. I was pleased with our effort. Our guys answered the call and competed hard. We fought for every point and position we earned. It's exciting to watch these young guys compete, and we are looking forward to seeing what they can do Saturday."

In exhibition matches, Jon Gonzales (149) won by decision over Dontrez Banks (8-7). Nathan Rankin (133, 1st) won by fall over David Lawson (2:10). Tanner Chronister (157) won by fall over Dontrez Banks (1:50, 1st). Matt Garcia (285) won by major decision over Derrion Miller (15-4). Sharpe won by decision over Derrion Miller (10-8).
    
Muniz was excited to see others post wins, and feels the match will help the team this weekend.
    
"Our performance as a team was great," he said. "We had a lot of guys grab their first win of the year, which is great for not only their confidence, but gives us some momentum going into the tournament this weekend."

The Eagles will now have matches in Michigan (Olivet College) and Texas (Southwest Open) Saturday.
