Eagles Complete Day One At NCAA III Regionals

Dubuque, Iowa-University of the Ozarks wrestlers Nathan Rankin (125), Jake Dado (141) both advanced to today's semifinals in their respective weight divisions by both going 2-0 in Friday's action at the NCAA DIII Lower Midwest Regionals in Dubuque, Iowa. The Eagles as a team were in 10th place out of 18 teams. The top three individual finishers in each division will advance to the national championships next month in Des Moines, Iowa. The third-seeded Rankin, who advanced to the NCAA DIII national championships as a freshman and a junior, stayed on track to make his second nationals appearance by defeating Cade Hornback of University of Dubuque by decision (5-3) in the first round and then taking a major decision (9-1) over Dylan McChesney of Simpson College in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.  Also seeded third in his division, Dado won his first-round match by fall over Naseer Willis of Schreiner before defeating Brock Beck of Central College by decision (7-2) in the quarterfinals. In the 285-pound class, Ka'Ron Lewis stayed alive by going 2-1 on the day. He defeated Jack Haury by decision (7-0) in the consolation bracket to remain in contention. Earlier he had defeated Robert Hernandez of Schreiner by decision (7-3) before falling by fall in the quarterfinals to top-seeded Kaleb Reeves of Coe College.  In the 174-pound division, the Eagles' John Ward also went 2-1 on the day. He won his first match by decision (8-6) over Thomas McCreadie of Dubuque before falling to the division's top seed, Zane Mulder of Wartburg, by major decision in the quarterfinals. He came back and won his first consolation match by decision (9-6) over Jayson Spencer of Huntingdon College. In the 149-pound class, Jaylen York won over Jared Gallub of Nebraska Wesleyan in the first round before falling to a Central College wrestler by fall in the quarterfinals and then again in the consolation round. Joaquin Bautista went 2-2 on the day, winning his preliminary and match before his opening-round match and going 1-1 in the consolation bracket. Ndayambaje John went 1-2 on the day, winning in the first round over an Augustana College wrestler before losing in the quarterfinals to Will Esmoil of Coe College by fall and then again in the consolation round. Eagle wrestlers Gabriel  Brandenburg (133) and Cruz Partain (197) both lost their first-round main draw matches before going 1-1 in the consolation round. In total, nine of the 10 Eagle wrestlers won at least one match on Friday.
