Chesterfield, Mo.-The Eagles competed in their first open of the season and put up a strong performance at the Kaufman Brand Open hosted by Maryville University on Saturday.
The Eagles found success against outstanding competition in each weight class. Ka'Ron Lewis won the heavyweight class behind a fall, major decision and a decision. Numerous freshmen were able to gain valuable experience, according to head coach Vinny Barber.
"Overall, I am really happy with the team's performance this weekend," said Barber. "The team performed at a high level in their first open of the season. We will continue to get better and train for our opportunities to be great. It was great to see our freshmen go out and compete with some really high level, experienced athletes. We have a strong crew of young guys pushing the pace on themselves every day."
The Eagles were one of a few NCAA III institutions at the Open allowing them to face NCAA I, NCAA II and NAIA opponents.
"The point of this competition was to exploit the areas each guy needs to continue to get better at," said Barber. "We challenged our guys to go find out those areas in each match, and they did. Watching our team compete this weekend with a new sense of belief was very exciting to watch. They all are really starting to commit themselves to this process and this will continue to pay off each week."
Lewis won by decision (5-0) over Liam McDermott from NCAA I Indiana. Prior to that, Lewis won by major decision (10-0) over Jacob Johnson from Indianapolis and won by fall (Fall 3:50) over Mario Quezada from William Jewell.
"Ka'Ron put together a very strong three matches, continuing to improve each time he stepped on the mat," said Barber.
At 165, John Ward placed fourth. Ward won by decision over Connor Morin from Fontbonne (Dec 13-6). He won by decision over Hayden Trezek (SIRTC) (Dec 6-4). In the semifinal, Ben Phillips from Indiana won in sudden victory (SV-1 3-1). Ward won by decision over Trevor Wilson (Lindenwood) (Dec 10-6) in consolation action and then lost to Lucas Wendling from McKendree by decision (Dec 8-6).
The Eagles will now prepare for Carl Albert State College November 12 in Poteau.
