Clarksville, Ark.-The men's wrestling team had a strong showing at the Maryville Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open Saturday in St. Louis.
Airamis Mendoza won the 165-pound division (amateur) by posting a perfect 4-0 record. Mendoza opened with a win by decision (12-7) over Logan Farnell from University of Indianapolis. Mendoza then won by fall against Raymond Fernandez from Quincy. In the semi-finals, he won by medical forfeit over Alfredo Zapata from Central Baptist. In the finals, Mendoza posted a win by major decision (12-4) against Kaden Lone from University of Indianapolis.
The Eagles had others who had big performances. Johnathon Ward placed sixth in the 174-pound division. He had a win by decision. Shelton Chastain finished fifth at 125. Chastain had a win by decision, tech fall and fall. Benjamin Beaty placed fifth at 141. He had a win by major decision and a medical forfeit. Zander Payne placed fifth in his division at 141. He had a pair of falls. At 285, Philip Saenz placed fourth and Masyn Marble placed sixth. Saenz won by major decision and a fall. Marble had a win by fall.
"The guys had a great showing today," said head coach Vinny Barber. "Airamis had a great tournament, winning his first collegiate open. I'm really proud of that kid for coming back from an injury last season. We also had several guys place and win a lot of good matches. Our young guys got great experience against solid programs. Today gave us some great insight and areas of focus as we continue. We are looking forward to getting back in the room with them this week as we prepare for our home opener on Tuesday."
The Eagles will host the most popular wrestling event in Arkansas on November 7. Carl Albert College will again come to Clarksville for an outdoor match in front of hundreds of students and wrestling enthusiasts. Fans can enjoy both the men's and women's team as well as give-aways, food trucks and games.
