THE BASICS
Belhaven University broke a 68-68 tie with 35 seconds left in the game with a three-pointer to hand the Eagles a heart-breaking 72-70 loss Thursday night in American Southwest Conference play. The Eagles held a 35-33 halftime lead. The Eagles shot an impressive 63 percent from the field in the first quarter. Both teams went back and forth in the third quarter with Belhaven narrowly getting the upper hand finishing with a 52-47 advantage. The Eagles played catch-up in the fourth quarter with Kamryn McKinney nailing a three-pointer to put give her team up 58-55. Janna Rhinehart later followed with another three-pointer to give the Eagles a 61-57 advantage. Stevie Perkins drilled a three-pointer of her own to keep the score tied at 64-64 with less than four minutes to play. With the score tied 66-66, Belhaven scored a layup with 52 seconds remaining to move ahead by two points, but Perkins answered with a shot to even the score. However, Belhaven would drill a clutch three-pointer on its next possession. The Eagles did answer with a shot by Janna Rhinehart with eight seconds left. Kelsey Dixson scored 12 points and pulled down 13 rebounds, while Kerigan Bradshaw had 13 points and ten rebounds. Bradshaw nearly posted a triple-double with eight assists. Rhinehart led with 17 points behind a 3-of-6 shooting performance from the three-point line.
