Eagles Split With Howard Payne

Eagles Split With Howard Payne

Clarksville, Ark.-A day after getting suspended due to darkness, the Eagles finished off Howard Payne Saturday afternoon grabbing a 6-4 win in American Southwest Conference action.

The Eagles grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first with a Sam Shook run. Shook advanced home on an HPU error. But the Yellow Jackets tied the game in fourth with a home run over the left field wall by Matthew Daniel, who had two homers in the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, with Andrew Beck on base, Peyton Johnigan singled to right field to put runners on the corners. Andres Acosta then hit an RBI single to drive home Beck and give Ozarks a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles tagged on four runs in the fifth to move ahead 6-1. Howard Payne responded with two runs of their own in the seventh to make it 6-3. The game was then suspended due to darkness and later continued Saturday in the eighth inning. HPU added a run in the ninth, but that would be all they could get against relief pitcher Andrew Beck, who received a save. Grady Finley (2-1) took the win after tossing seven innings and striking out three.

In game one, HPU took a convincing 16-2 win. The Eagles had a pair of hits and a walk to load the bases in the first inning but could not capitalize and left all three men on. Jeffrey Works (0-3) gave up five runs in the second inning and the Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 lead.

The Eagles' only runs of the game came in the fifth inning on a Beck double that drove home Taylor Parker and John Singler to make the score 11-2.
