Pitching Staff Comes Up Big Against Hardin-Simmons

Clarksville, Ark.-The Ozarks pitching staff struck out a combined 19 on the day to earn a double-header sweep over Hardin-Simmons University Thursday in American Southwest Conference play.

Starting pitcher Jeffery Works fanned ten and Freddy Prince delivered the game-winning hit in a 1-0 game one victory. Tyler Erickson, Danny Gable and Andrew Beck later combined to strike out nine in a 8-7 game two win.

In game one, Works (3-3) allowed just four hits and issued only two walks to receive the win. Works kept the shutout intact to allow the Eagles (12-21, 8-18 ASC) to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Andres Acosta led off the bottom half of the inning with a single to right field. Taylor Parker then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt to advance Alex Smith, who pinch ran for Acosta, to second base. Peyton Johnigan was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for Dean Igert. Igert popped out in the infield for the second out of the frame. However, Prince ripped a two-out hit through the left side of the infield to score the game-winning run. It was Prince's only hit of the game.

John Singler went 2-for-3 for Ozarks.

In game two, Erickson (1-5) received his first win of the season after striking out six in five innings and the Eagles then had to hold off the Cowboys (13-19, 9-17 ASC) in the ninth inning to secure the win. Tony Morales and Singler each had RBI in the first inning to give Ozarks a 2-0 advantage. Hardin-Simmons answered with three runs in the top of the second to take the lead back. The Eagles then responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Sam Shook had a standup double to drive both runs in for Ozarks.

Ozarks added to its lead in the fourth behind RBI from Morales and Singler. But Hardin-Simmons made things interesting in the top of the ninth. Trailing 8-5, the Cowboys rallied for two runs on three hits, and had the game-winning run on third with two outs. However, Beck ended the game in relief with a fly out against pinch hitter Trey Thompson. Beck received his third save of the season. Gable struck out three in two innings of work.

Singler went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs. Shook and Morales also drove in two runs.
