Baseball Team Eyes Improvement In Year Two Under Gentry

Clarksville, Ark.-The University of the Ozarks baseball team is aiming for continued improvement with six position starters returning under second-year head coach Aaron Gentry.

In Gentry's first season, the pitching staff lowered its ERA by nearly two runs from the previous season. The team also raised its batting average and on-base percentage.

"My expectations are the same every year, and that is to get the most out of the players," said Gentry. "We want to refine their skills in way that translates into being more competitive in this conference. One specific goal is to get better in all facets of the game."

The Eagles had five or six freshmen in the lineup nearly every game last season. Ozarks went 14-26 overall and 5-19 in the ASC.

"We were very young last year," said Gentry. "We are more mature now. Our team had a tough time staying focused throughout games and practice last season. I do see this team being able to improve that. Our goal for the team is to be just as energetic at the end of the season as we are at the beginning of the season."

Gentry's focus in the preseason has been on fundamentals.

"This program needs to work on being a fundamental team," said Gentry. "Specifically, our pitchers need to come in and throw strikes. Our defense needs to get outs. Our offense needs to make consistent contact. As those things improve, we believe it will have a direct affect on wins. A lot of that goes back to the focus and mental toughness of the team."

Ozarks returns most of its pitching staff, including All-Conference right-hander Brady Taylor. The sophomore posted a 2-4 record with a 4.89 ERA. Right-hander Jacob Barker returns for his junior season after posting four saves. Senior right-hander Keaton Ramsey threw 44.1 innings last season.

"The pitching staff is much improved from last year," said Gentry. "Coach Bacon does a great job with our pitchers. We have several guys that can take the helm. Our overall depth is better. Our older pitchers have set the tone with their work ethic and maturity. The rotation is still up for grabs because there are several guys that could go."

Competition for playing time has been fierce in the preseason.

"On the mound, we have the most competition," said Gentry. "If you produce you play. It doesn't matter if you are a freshman or returner. There are other spots up for grabs, too."

The Eagles will produce a more balanced offensive attack. Senior Andrew Beck leads the offense bringing his .429 batting average back from a year ago.

"I think we can generate runs in different ways," said Gentry. "We won't be a one dimensional offense. The starting pitchers in this conference have command with at least two pitches. So we must be able to make adjustments throughout the game in order to generate runs. I believe we will have more power and more speed on the bases. I think we will be a more aggressive team."

Gentry is excited about the newcomers as several incoming players will make a difference.

"We are very excited about our newcomers," he said. "They will have a direct impact on our success. They will change the face of our team offensively and on the mound. They are very hard workers."

Gentry is pleased with the team's upbeat attitude and chemistry.

"We have committed to be positive," he said. "The chemistry of the team has improved from last year. The energy and excitement fuels all of us. With that energy comes a lot of confidence and an expectation of things to come."

Ozarks will open the season February 14 against Williams Baptist in Walnut Ridge.
