Spurgeon Brilliant On Mound, Edwards Hits Grand Slam In 11-5 Win

Clarksville, Ark.-University of the Ozarks sophomore pitcher Dalton Spurgeon did not allow an earned run through 6.2 innings and freshman first baseman Chase Edwards hit a grand slam to cap an 11-5 win over McMurry University in game three of its American Southwest Conference series.

The right-handed Spurgeon was impressive throughout the day, striking out five and keeping the War Hawks (7-10, 3-3 ASC) from threatening. Spurgeon did not allow a hit through 3.2 innings. Spurgeon got the run support he needed as the Eagles (6-8, 3-6 ASC) scored three runs in the first inning. Justin Crider hit a solo home run from his lead-off position to jumpstart the Eagles. Zach Jones singled in Edwards and Patrick Mixon doubled in Jones. Edwards added an RBI in the second inning to give Spurgeon a 4-0 lead to work with. McMurry eventually scored in the fourth behind two hits and two Ozarks' errors. But the Eagles responded in a big way in the bottom of the fifth. The Eagles totaled three hits, none bigger than Edwards' grand slam over the right field fence to move Ozarks ahead 11-2. Prior to Edwards, Jordan Jones posted an RBI single and Crider drew a bases loaded walk. The War Hawks would score three times in the seventh, but ace relief pitcher Jacob Barker did not allow a hit in the eighth or ninth inning.

Ozarks recorded 12 hits in the contest, while Spurgeon and Barker limited McMurry to five hits.

Edwards finished 2-for-5 with five RBI. Crider went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Zach Jones and Jordan Jones both had two hits.

Spurgeon (1-2) received the win after allowing just four hits.

Ozarks will host Grinnell College March 18-19.
