Jackson, Miss.-Freshman right-hander Gyeongju Kim retired 18 straight batters and didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning, but it wouldn't be enough as Belhaven sent the game into extras and pulled out a 4-3 American Southwest Conference game two victory on Thursday.
Kim tossed eight innings, struck out 11 and issued just one walk. He scattered four hits and was charged with two earned runs. Kim cruised through six and one-third innings before allowing a hit. During that stretch, the 6-foot-1, 210-pounder fanned eight. His shutout was broke up when Stephen Sexton singled in a run. Ozarks (9-21, 3-14 ASC) had built a 3-0 lead prior to that. In the fourth, Jake Smith broke a scoreless game when he drew a bases loaded walk. In the sixth, the Eagles plated two more runs.
Belhaven (21-14, 10-10 ASC) trimmed the deficit to 3-2 on a two-out RBI triple, and then generated another run in the ninth to even the score 3-3 on an RBI single against pitcher Jacob Barker.
In the top of the tenth, Belhaven retired three straight Ozarks' batters. In the bottom half of the inning, Belhaven JG Miley drew a walk and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, pinch hitter Gabe Veith flew out to right field, and Miley was not only able to advance to third but scored all the way from second on an error.
Relief pitcher Hayden Keller (0-1) was charged with the loss.
Chase Edwards and Josh Woolly had two hits apiece.
In game one, Belhaven put runs on the board in the first, second, third, fourth, sixth inning to fuel a 13-0 win over the Eagles.
The Blazers pounded out 15 hits in the win. A two-run homer in the second inning gave Belhaven a 4-0 lead. The home team then added three more runs in the third to take control of the game. Another home run in the fourth put Belhaven in front 10-0 in the fourth. Ely Gordon (0-1) took the loss for Ozarks.
Ozarks will finish its series tomorrow with a single game beginning at 1:00 p.m.
