Q&A With Grady Finley '16

Grady Finley and family.

Grady Finley used his experience as a baseball player and student worker in the athletic training office to propel himself into a medical career. As a student, Finley completed an internship at the Cescal Sports Performance Foundation in Panama City, Panama to fuel his passion in athletic training. He and his wife, Madi '17, have one son, Mickey. Finley is now a Clinical Athletic Trainer At UAMS.

  • How did you find Ozarks and what drew you to our University?

The head baseball coach, now athletic director, Jimmy Clark called me and asked me to come for a visit to discuss playing baseball. I really liked the campus size and how personal the environment felt.

  • What are some of your favorite Ozarks/Clarksville memories?

I met my wife at Ozarks, she played basketball and ran cross country. Sledding down King Hill in laundry baskets was another fun memory, or playing our opening series of the season in the snow at Lonnie R. Qualls Field. I have several great fishing stories that usually happened after baseball practice where we raced to get to some water before the sun went down.

  • How did your experience at Ozarks help to shape your future?

Ozarks was a place where I immediately felt like I had people who believed in me and encouraged me to achieve. Having people pour into you (that aren't family) helps you to start believing in yourself and setting goals that you wouldn't have thought you could before. I had mentors like Jimmy Clark, Robert Mummey, Chad Floyd and Jeremy Provence, and so many great teammates/classmates that poured into and encouraged me.

  • What was your experience as a student-athlete like at U of O?

Being a student-athlete at U of O created so many lasting friendships. The primary difference between collegiate and high school sports is the time commitment. The amount of time that you spend with your teammates and coaches creates bonds that last a long time. It creates a family, albeit maybe a slightly dysfunctional one, but I still know that I can count on those people. They are still rooting for me now and I am rooting for them, just from a distance.

  • What would you like to say to current U of O athletes if you could give them some advice?

Embrace the experience and let it become a part of you. Your team and your coaches are now a part of your life for better or for worse. Be the teammate that you want to have encouraging you.

  • What are some hobbies and interests that you have?

I have an 18-month old son and spending time with him is my newest and most practiced hobby. We enjoy being outdoors camping, fishing, and hiking when we can. Madi and I still like to act like athletes and have picked up disc golfing and slow-pitch softball.
