Mississippi College Baseball Team Completes Three-Game Sweep

Clarksville, Ark.-Mississippi College scored a pair of decisive runs in the top of the seventh to pick up a 6-4 game one win and then followed with a 11-6 victory to complete a Saturday afternoon sweep against the Eagles in American Southwest Conference play.

In game one, Ozarks (8-15, 5-13 ASC) trailed 3-0 after four complete innings, but stormed back behind a four-run fifth inning to take a 4-3 advantage. With one out, Taylor Parker ripped a single through the left side of the infield and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Peyton Johnigan followed up with an RBI single and Dean Igert and Freddy Prince recorded back-to-back singles to load the bases. Sam Shook had a sacrifice fly to score Johnigan, and with still only one out, Andrew Beck drew a walk to load the bases again. Tony Morales then delivered a two-run single to left field to put the Eagles ahead by a run. However, the Choctaws (12-11, 10-8 ASC) answered with a run in the top of the sixth to even the game, 4-4. The Choctaws responded with two more runs in the seventh on two hits, but also took advantage of a costly Ozarks' error. Choctaw pitcher Jon Mark Herrington then retired the side to secure the win.

Prince paced Ozarks with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Relief pitcher Grady Finley (2-3) took the loss after allowing both runs in the seventh. Jeffrey Works went six innings as the starter and fanned three.

Mississippi College used its momentum from game one to jump on the Eagles early. The Choctaws posted four runs in the second and six in the third to hold a 10-0 lead. Beck had a sacrifice fly to score a run in the bottom of the third, but the Choctaws got the run back in the sixth. Ozarks bounced back with three runs in the seventh behind four hits. Prince, Shook and Morales all had RBI singles in the frame to give Ozarks hope for the final two innings. The Eagles did load the bases with no outs for Beck in the bottom of the ninth, and he promptly drove a single up the middle to score two runs. The Choctaws then inserted closer Blake Roberts and he quickly ended Ozarks' threat by retiring all three batters he faced.

Ozarks ended the game with 12 hits, while Mississippi College finished with 14. Prince and Igert each went 3-for-4. Beck drove in three runs. Alex Rodriguez (0-2) took the loss as the starter.

Ozarks will host conference foe Louisiana College April 4-5 in a three-game series.
